What maintenance routines are recommended for aluminium cable lugs to prevent corrosion

Regular checking of aluminium cable lugs is necessary to ensure them lasting long and operating consistently as part of an electrical circuit. Check the lugs regularly for signs of corrosion, colour deterioration, or general physical degradation and investigate particularly where the lug touches the cable, ensuring that there is a high degree of fit and no traces of wear out. Early identification facilitates early fixes, and petty issues never form major issues. Abrasive materials should not be used as they could scratch the surface since such blemishes will serve as points of initiation of corrosion. In corrosive environments, an additional protection against moisture and contaminants could be achieved by applying a protective coating after cleaning. Application of anti-corrosion chemicals is another tried and tested preventive measure. If the aluminium cable lugs have been cleaned, application of a corrosion-inhibiting compound, for instance, grease containing zinc dust, can serve to protect the connection. The grease will perform the function of a corrosion inhibitor, and the zinc as a sacrificial element, preventing oxidation of aluminium. The compound should be applied immediately after brushing so that no oxide remains on the surface and thus offers maximum protection. One has to ensure proper connections because there will be a high resistance along with heat developed, accelerating the corrosion process if loose fittings occur. After fixing, one can re-tighten the connection after a small time gap, such as 15 days, and then arrange for periodic checks of torque for one or two times a year, depending upon the application. This preserves the integrity of electrical connection and precludes thermal growth and vibration-linked problems.
